Indeed, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed early with oral cancer is 75% &#8212; however, the rate drops to only 20% for those diagnosed after the cancer has spread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, your dentist will perform an oral cancer\nscreening as part of every routine dental checkup. This typically includes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A visual examination inside your mouth for signs\nof oral cancer <\/li><li>A manual examination for unusual bumps and lumps\non your neck, face and head<\/li><li>A conversation about your exposure to oral\ncancer risk factors (e.g., tobacco use) <\/li><li>Asking questions to help identify nonvisible\nsymptoms of oral cancer (e.g., hoarse voice)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Often Should I See a Dentist? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Dental Associations recommends seeing a dentist every six months for a routine dental checkup.
